Apple tests foldable color electronic paper screens

Apple is testing the use of an e-ink color screen as an external display for an undisclosed foldable device, according to famed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

The EPD variety electronic paper show can possibly turn into a standard answer for foldable gadgets that should have a cover or second screen thanks to its astounding energy investment funds, the investigator wrote in a tweet.

The analyst adds that the e-ink screen is also being tested in tablet-like devices. Most foldable tablet-style devices on the market today pair a large internal foldable screen with a smaller external screen for quickly checking notifications.

However, current gadgets like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 or the Oppo Find N use OLED boards for both.

Apple's use of the E-ink display almost certainly makes the external display less responsive with fewer colours. But, Koe points out, they can be more energy efficient.

The e-ink technology is best known for its monochrome screens that Amazon uses in its Kindle devices. But E Ink also has a line of color displays.

E Ink recently announced Gallery 3, a new version of its color e-ink technology capable of producing more colors with higher accuracy.

They can also refresh much faster than the company's previous color screens, although they're still a long way from the response rate of equivalent OLED or LCD screens.

E Ink's promotional videos show how the screen can be folded or rolled.
And rumors have surfaced that Apple is planning to join the likes of Samsung and Huawei in launching a foldable device. It was reported in 2021 that Apple was designing prototypes of foldable displays internally.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects as of April this year that Apple will release a 9-inch foldable screen device in 2025 at the earliest.

Bloomberg also reported that the company has an additional device with a larger, foldable 20-inch screen in development. But it won't be releaseable before 2026.
Kuo's latest prediction did not mention the size of the foldable device with the e-ink screen.

Although Apple may be late in entering the foldable market. But it does have an advantage in iPadOS, the tablet operating system that features strong support for apps from third-party developers.

While foldable tablet-sized devices such as Samsung, Honor and Oppo rely on Android. This operating system does not provide consistent support for devices with large screens.

It may be years from seeing Apple's foldable device. But Ku's comments offer a view on where Apple might be headed.
